Modesto Area Express (MAX) operates intracity services within the City of Modesto and nearby Ceres and Salida, with a total of 18 routes. It also operates two intercity services, linking Modesto with two train stations: Lathrop/Manteca ACE to the north and Dublin/Pleasanton BART to the west. All services, including Ceres Area Transit (CAT), are provided by Storer Transportation.

High-Floored Buses

MAX operates two types of high-floored buses:

  • Gillig Phantom 40-footer buses (5 units)
  • MCI D4500CT buses (4 units), 3 of which sport the older livery, the other with the new livery (exclusive for Modesto to BART Express)

MAX’s MCI buses are deployed on the ACE Express service to Lathrop and the BART Express to Dublin/Pleasanton. Those buses have AC power ports on select seats, reclining seats, WiFi on board, and luggage space on the bottom belly of each bus.

Low-Floored Buses

MAX operates Gillig LF35 and LF40 buses primarily for its intracity services. There is one Gillig LF40 Hybrid bus in operation, in which it is primarily used on its service to Salida on Route 28 (though this might be deployed on any local route when warranted).

Dial-a-Ride Services

Modesto has two dial-a-ride services that allow deviated service for qualified riders and supplemental service for the general public:

  • Modesto Dial-a-Ride with MAX
  • Ceres Dial-a-Ride, operated independently under contract by Storer
