Caltrain is a commuter rail service connecting San Francisco, San Mateo County, and Santa Clara County, linking communities from South San Francisco to Sunnyvale. It offers limited weekday-only services to Morgan Hill and Gilroy south of San Jose. In addition to its regular and skip-stop train services, Caltrain also operates the Baby Bullet service which only stops at major stations along the line during the weekday peak periods and weekends.

Note: sometimes, the passenger cars can be swapped between the Bombardier and Nippon Sharyo for both train engines depending on both demand and carriage availability.

The locomotives, numbered 923 to 928, were built by MPI in 2003. Only one of them, unit 925, is named (after State Senator Jackie Speier).  As for the passenger cars, 25 of the Bombardier passenger cars have the current Caltrain colors, 10 of which are bike cars and the rest being passenger and luggage cars.
Bombardier passenger car interiors include AC power ports under each table, as well as near select seats.
Between 2014 and 2015, Caltrain acquired five used Bombardier passenger cars from MetroLink in Los Angeles that are used to augment passenger loads along the corridor. These lightly refurbished cars have similar padded seating to the newer rail cars, but these have fewer AC outlets and tables on board.

F40PH-2 with Nippon-Sharyo Passenger Cars

Twenty-three EMD locomotive units, numbered 900 to 922, have been in service with Caltrain since 1985, all of which have been refurbished in 1999. Three distinct locomotive types are in operation, all of which have names associated with the cities and counties served by Caltrain:

  • F40PH-2 (numbers 902, 903, 907, 910, 914)
  • F40PH-2-CAT (numbers 900, 901, 904, 905, 906, 908, 909, 911, 912, 913, 915, 916, 917, 918, 919)
  • F40PH-2C (numbers 920, 921, 922) – unit 920 is co-branded as Morgan Hill and Operation Lifesaver
In addition, a total of 93 Nippon Sharyo passenger cars are in operation, 44 of which have bike space for up to 40 bikes each, and 26 of them have luggage racks on board. The following images below are interior shots from various Nippon Sharyo passenger cars:
