Which Marin Transit Services Will Go to a New Contractor? (Updated)

I’ve been following the developments of the upcoming Marin Transit Service Changes due 12 June 2016, in which I have been tipped off by at least two drivers working for Marin Airporter on which Golden Gate Transit routes will go to either Marin Airporter or MV Transportation. So far, the details are a bit fluid, but I have some idea of which routes have been awarded to both agencies.
If you’ve seen my recent headline about the new Gillig BRT Hybrid buses rolling out in Marin County, a few Marin Airporter and MV Transportation drivers are being trained to operated on those buses in preparation for the upcoming service changes which will see a service level increase of 19%, two new express routes, and more shuttle services. To recap which vehicles are operated by the three contractors:
Golden Gate Transit
Marin Airporter
MV Transportation
Per Robert Betts, Marin Transit’s planner, here are the routes that will be transferred from Golden Gate Transit to another contractor:

Other developments include:

  • The new Route 23X, operating between Fairfax Manor and the Canal District in San Rafael via 2nd and 3rd Streets, will be interlined with the restructured Route 29 that will operate between College of Marin and the Canal District via Larkspur Landing and Marin General Hospital. These two routes will operate AM and PM peaks only, from 6am to 10am and from 2pm to 9pm.
  • The Route 71 will be rebranded as Route 71X to reflect its limited-stop nature within Marin County. Replacement services for US-101 bus pads are available on Golden Gate Transit Routes 30 and 70, plus Marin Transit Routes 17, 35, 36, and 49.
  • The other big bus routes (Routes 17, 23, 35, 36) will remain in operation with Golden Gate Transit.
As for the following services, no changes will be made:

  • All shuttle routes (2xx series) – Marin Airporter
  • All school day-only routes (1xx series) – MV Transportation
  • Muir Woods Shuttle (Routes 66 and 66F) – MV Transportation
  • West Marin Stagecoach (Routes 61 and 68) – MV Transportation
