2012: New Music Discovery

Looks like 2012 will be an interesting year for me in terms of discovering new musical talent, and it seems like the New Year has brought me to listen to fresh talent… from Azerbaijan.
My musical tastes tend to be very interesting and diverse, especially when it comes to pop, techno, and love tunes. I’ve scoured through YouTube videos lately for anything I can watch; so random, I ended up watching national anthems from Central Asian countries such as Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. As I watched through one of the anthems, I noticed a video entitled Eurovision Song Contest 2011 – Azerbaijan (Winner). Given the fact that I have watched Eurovision Song Contest videos several months back (and eventually downloaded the winning song from 2009, “Fairytale” by Alexander Rybak from Norway), I’ve watched the 2011 final, in which it made me hooked from start to finish. The winning song, entitled “Running Scared” by Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal (also known as Ell and Nikki), was performed in front of a live audience in Dusseldorf, Germany, and it was broadcast throughout the European Broadcast area (including Russia, former Soviet states, and Israel) as well as overseas.

As I listened to the song, I was stunned at how the pair worked the song very well, and Ell and Nikki’s voices have kept me thinking about one of my New Year’s resolutions: to finally be with the person I really want to be for the rest of my life. The song made me touched because it shows a loving relationship between a young man and a young lady, and its simple and original lyrics help me understand the nature of love in its raw form. The song has become one of my most favorite tunes (although it’s too early to call), and the song reminds me of the originality of Westlife in terms of songwriting and singing: for the fourteen years of their existence, they have created 128 original songs, many of which became number 1s in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and their songs kept me hooked for the past 14 years. Although they’ve broken up last year, Shane Filan, Westlife’s lead singer, will keep making music on his own, and I will tune in to him as he pursues a solo career.

So, here’s the song that I’ve been talking about: Ell and Nikki, with Running Scared. With Azerbaijan being the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Germany, the country will host this year’s contest in Baku, something to look forward to for me.
